WWTCC Round 8 Results

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHINESE TEAM THAT IS WORLD CHAMPION WITH ONE ROUND TO GO!

In the penultimate round of the championship Ukrainian players embraced themselves in a tough match against China to score 2.5-1.5. Natalia Zhukova won against Zhao Xue on the third board and all the rest games were drawn. China lost the first match points in the tournament, but... already became a champion!

The reason is that India who had been following China lost to Georgia 1-3. The first two boards made draws, while Bela Khotenashvili won against Tania Sachdev on the third board and Nino Khurtsidze outplayed Soumya Swaminathan on the fourth.

Russia won 4-0 against RSA and jumped on the second rank, but cannot catch China by board points, even if there is still a theoretical chance to catch it by match points.

Armenia scored 2.5-1.5 win against Vietnam, Greece crushed Turkey 3.5-0.5.

Standings after 8 rounds: China – 14; Russia – 12; India – 11; Georgia, Ukraine – 10; Armenia, Vietnam – 8; Turkey – 4; Greece – 3; RSA – 0.

WWTCC Round 7 Results

INDIAN TEAM

China overtook Georgia. Ju Wenjun won against Lela Javakhishvili on the second board and Zhao Xue won against Bela Khotenashvili on the third.

India vs. Greece suddenly was not such a clear match. In the final position of the game the leader of Greek team Elena Dembo had an advantage against Humpy Koneru, but agreed a draw. Two more games were drawn, despite the rating difference. Only a victory of Harika Dronavalli against Marina Makropoulou helped India to take 2 match points.
Russia won against Turkey 3-1. However, the second board of Turkish squad Kubra Ozturk became a grandmaster winning the game against Tatiana Kosintseva – Ozturk had all the norms completed and needed only the rating points. Kubra becomes the second Turkish-born women grandmaster in the home country of the championship.

Ukraine took an upper hand on Armenia 2.5 – 1.5 in an uncompromising battle. Elina Danielian won against Anna Ushenina, but Mariya Muzychuk and Inna Gaponenko struck back by winning against Lilit Mkrtchian and Lilit Galojan respectively. The last board game ended in a draw.

Vietnam crushed RSA 4-0.

Standings after round 7: China – 14; India – 11; Russia - 10; Ukraine, Vietnam, Georgia – 8; Armenia – 6; Turkey – 4; Greece – 1; RSA - 0.

WWTCC Round 6 Results

China won another match, this time against Greece. However, Greek players made 2 draws with white (and from the position of strength): Marina Makropoulou against Ju Wenjun on the second board and Ekaterini Pavlidou vs.Tan Zhongyi on the fourth.

Chinese are now 3 match points ahead of runner up India, as the latter lost to Russia in a tough encounter. Humpy Koneru – Nadezhda Kosintseva and Harika Dronovalli – Tatiana Kosintseva ended in draws. However, Russia was stronger on the lower boards: Valentina Gunina won against Tania Sachdev and Natalia Pogonina against Soumya Swaminathan. Russia celebrated 3-1 victory to join Georgia on the third rank.

Ukraine vs. Georgia was a close match with chances for both sides. Each team scored one win: Bela Khotenashvili was stronger than Mariya Muzychuk and Natalia Zhukova overtook     Nino Khurtsidze. This draw with big probability left Ukraine without medals.

Vietnam took an upper hand on Turkey.

RSA could not make a surprise against Armenia, losing 0-4.

Team standings after 6 rounds: China – 12; India – 9; Georgia, Russia – 8; Ukraine, Armenia, Vietnam – 6; Turkey – 4; Greece – 1; RSA – 0.

Rest day For WWTCC 2011

Organizers of WWTC made their best for a rest day in Mardin to become unforgettable. The program included morning excursion to the city with its old buildings, historical monuments, bazaar and museum. The weather was warm and sunny – the perfect free day!

A large number of participants (including world champion Hou Yifan anfd her coach), trainers and other affiliated persons took part.

In the afternoon the program continued with the ride to ancient
Mesopotamian city Dara – a lifetime historical experience. It is not necessary to say that even more people decided to join – several minibuses were full.

Round 4 did not bring many surprises. China won against Vietnam 3-1, scoring on the two lower boards (Zhao Xue - Nguyen Thi Thanh An 1-0 and Hoang Thi Nhu - Tan Zhongyi Y 1-0) and remain in the lead with 100 percent match points.

"Black Monday" for the Most favourites

Tania & Harika

On 19 October 1987 the largest one-day percentage decline in recorded stock market history happened. This day is referred to as “Black Monday” since. Today at WWTC the actions of the favorite teams dropped, too. Can we call it "Black Tuesday" now?

Georgia lost to Vietnam 1.5-2.5 as Lela Javakhishvili on the second board gave it up to Hoang Thi Bao Tram and Nino Khurtsidze lost to Hoang Thi Nhu Y on the fourth board. The encounters on the first and third boards ended in draws.

Turkey took an upper hand on Ukraine due to a great performance of the first two boards – Betul Yildiz won against Anna Ushenina and Kubra Ozturk made Inna Gaponenko resign. Natalia Zhukova could not get more than a draw from Kardelen Cemhan on the third board. The victory of Tatiana Vasilevich over Ebru Kaplan did not matter much anymore, as Turkey secured 2.5-1.5 overall win and scored first 2 match points.

Russia could not overcome the resistance of Greece – the teams exchanged punches on the boards 3 and 4 (Valentina Gunina scored against Ekaterini Fakhiridou while another Ekaterini – Pavlidou – won against Natalia Pogonina). Kosintseva sisters drew against Yelena Dembo and Marina Makropoulou. The first match point for Greece!

As the rates of the European teams’ chess “actions” fell, Asia is on the raise – India crushed RSA 4-0 and China did not leave any single point to Armenia (4-0) to become a sole leader of the event!

After 2 rounds China is ahead of the field with 6 match points. India and Russia have 5 match points, Georgia and Vietnam – 4, Armenia and Turkey – 2, Ukraine and Greece – 1, RSA – 0.

WWTCC Round 2 Results

One of the central matches of the second round was the encounter between Russia and Ukraine. After the start of the match, the result was not easy to predict due to the fights on all the boards. Deeper in the game Russia got an overall advantage that transformed first into the win of Valentina Gunina over Tatjana Vasilevich. The victory was secured by Tatiana Kosinseva who took an upper hand over Maria Muzychuk. The games between Anna Ushenina and Nadezhda Kosintseva on the first board and Natalia Zhukova and Alexandra Kosteniuk on the third board were drawn for Russia to win 3-1 and remain in the lead.

Another important encounter between two leaders after round 1: Georgia had a close match against Armenia and only the victory of Nana Dzagnidze against Elina Danielian on the first board contributed to an overall win. All the other games ended in draws. Georgia is another leader after round 2.
China convincingly won over RSA 4-0 and is the third leader after 2 rounds.

India scored 3,5 against Turkey – Kubra Ozturk on the second board was again the hero of the team as she drew with Tania Sachdev who is nearly 200 rating points above.

Lastly, Vietnam won against Greece with the least margin – all draws but win of Hoang Thi Bao Tram vs. Marina Makropoulou on the second board.

After 2 rounds three teams have won both matches and have 4 match points: Georgia, China, Russia. India has 3 match points. Armenia and Vietnam have 2 match points, Ukraine – 1. Turkey, Greece and RSA yet have not scored a match.
