FIDE Women Grand Prix Round 6

All the games of the 6th round of the FIDE Women Grand Prix in Ankara ended with decisive results. Humpy Koneru won against the earlier co-leader Ruan Lufei in the line which already happened in the game Kosintseva-Koneru.

Anna Muzyhcuk displayed a fantastic fighting spirit and managed to win against Betul Yildiz after 130 moves of tough contest. Koneru and Muzychuk have 5 out of 6 each and keep on leading in the Grand Prix at the moment.

Monika Socko celebrated her first victory in the clash against the Turkish player Kubra Ozturk. Meanwhile, Tatiana Kosintseva defeated Viktorija Cmilyte in the rook endgame.

Chinese players Ju Wenjun and Zhao Xue outplayed Antoaneta Stefanova and Munguntuul Batkhuyag respectively and share the third place in the tournament.

Russia won the gold medal in the Chess Olympiad

The team of Russia won the gold medal in the women section of the Chess Olympiad in Istanbul. Alexandra Kosteniuk, Nadezhda Kosintsva, Tatiana Kosintseva, Natalia Pogonina, and Valentina Gunina brought the second consecutive Olympic gold for the Russian women team, continuing the reign that started in Khanty Mansiyks.

Russia edged China on tiebreak, as both teams finished on top with 19,0/22. Clear third place was for the team of Ukraine with 18,0/22.

The success of the women Russian team was key for bringing the Gaprindashvili Cup that is awarded to the best country at the Olympiad – sum of the points of men and women team.

To add to the amazing success of the golden Russian women generation, Nadezhda Kosintseva and Natalia Pogonina won individual gold medals on boards 3 and 5.

Valentina Gunina became the European Champion!

Round eleven was as thrilling as it was expected. All the attention turned to the top-boards which would identify the medallists of the EIWCC and also decide the participants of the World Cup. Anna Muzychuk, who was leading one point ahead of the nearest pursuers, lost against Russian player Valentina Gunina. Another important for the final standings game was played between Tatiana Kosintseva and Nana Dzagnidze. 

The Russian player also needed to win in order to share the first place. Playing with black pieces she started to push h-pawn, destroyed the coordination of white pieces and converted her advantage into full point. As a result Valentina Gunina, Anna Muzychuk and Tatiana Kosintseva share the first place but better performance made Valentina Gunina the European Champion. Tatiana Kosintseva placed second and Anna Muzychuk is on the third place. 14 players qualifed for the World Cup.
