9th Annual Philadelphia International


The 9th Annual Philadelphia International was held June 29-July 3 at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel, 17th & Race Streets, Philadelphia, PA.
The tournament was won by GM Abhijeet Gupta, reigning Indian champion, who finished with an undefeated 7½/9. Gupta took home $2,000 for his efforts.
IM Marani Venkatesh finished in 2nd place on 7/9 and also scored a GM norm to go with his $1,200.
WGM Padmini Rout finished with 5½/9 but played against strong enough opposition for that to be good enough for an IM norm.

Sasikiran Wins Rs.160,000 Blitz Event


Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran of Chennai won the Thanga Tharagai Blitz Tournament sponsored by AICF President J.C. D. Prabhakar that took place at Chennai on March 7, 2012.
 

The event held to celebrate the 64th birthday of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa was won by 1981-born Krishnan Sasikiran with a 9/9 sweep. Three players tied for the second place on 8 points in this 353-player event. Players were given 3 minutes to start with and a two second increment per move.

Sasikiran (Elo 2703) who bounced back into the 2700 rating club made mincemeat of the opposition which was atleast 157 Elo lower at best.

International Arbiter R. Srivatsan was the chief arbiter. A total of 29 titled players including six GMs from India and Ireland took part.

Final placings: 1 GM K. Sasikiran 9/9; 2-4. IM Vishnu Prasanna, GM J. Deepan Chakkravarthy, IM R. Siddharth 8 each; 5-7. IM M.R. Venkatesh, N. Surendran, Akash Pc Iyer 7.5 each; 8-19. GM R.B. Ramesh, IM S. Nitin, IM S. Vijayalakshmi, GM S.P. Sethuraman, FM V.A.V. Rajesh, Syed Anwar Shazuli, IM P. Karthikeyan, Ram S Krishnan, FM Aravindh Chithambaram, R.A. Pradeep Kumar, D. Krishna, K.
