Negroponte 2012

The Chess Academy of Chalkida “Palamedes of Evia” has the pleasure to invite you to the “Negroponte 2012″ International Tournament that will take place from 9th till 17th of August 2012 at the beautiful city of Chalkida in Greece.

The tournament will be an Open 9-round Swiss event with a total prize fund of 10.000 Euros. First prize is 3.000 EUR, with special prizes for women, juniors, best performance minus rating, etc. to be awarded. Players list bellow.

Special prices will also apply for the participants who will choose to stay at “Palliria Hotel”, the hotel that will also host the tournament. “Hotel Palliria” is situated in the centre of Chalkida, and has a breathtaking view over the Evripos Channel and the old bridge of Chalkida, the trademark of the city.

Chalkida

Chalkida (named as Negroponte (i.e. Black Bridge) in the Venetian era) is situated in Evia (70 kms from Athens) and is worldwide famous for the tidal phenomenon of the Evripos Channel with the flow direction of the sea currents in the channel changing every six hours!

The tidal phenomenon has provoked the admiration and interest of humans from ancient times, not only from an astronomical and geophysical perspective but also from a philosophical one. The mystery and beauty of this phenomenon captivates the visitor, as its combination with the imprint of the channel creates a remarkable panorama.

The city of Chalkida is an ideal place to combine chess with quality vacations. Chalkida, and Evia in general, offer all kind of recreation activities and the visitor can enjoy the beautiful beaches and countryside in the heart of the Greek summer.

Palliria Hotel

GM Suat Atalik was the convincing winner of the Negroponte Open 2010. 204 players from 29 countries competed, among them were 40 Grandmasters and 17 International Masters.

India – Israel Chess Match 2012

The Indian team outclassed their Israeli counterparts 29.5-18.5 in the India-Israel 2012 match, a curtain raiser to the world chess championship 2012 in Moscow.

Second highest rated Indian Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran paved the way for his team’s victory scoring a massive 7.5 out of a possible eight on the final day.

Winning seven games in all, Sasikiran just conceded a single draw when he could not force matters against Vitali Golod in the rapid game.

Higher ranked on all four boards, the Indian victory was expected but the way it came might give reasons for smile to world champion Viswanathan Anand who plays the next match against Boris Gelfand of Israel in May this year.

The Indians had held a healthy lead in the opening round which they built on, on the final day as well.

The day started with Abhijeet Gupta striking form against Ilia Smirin in the blindfold game that he won without much ado.

Sasikiran also caused the damage for the Israelis with a vital victory against Golod and by the time the final round began the Indian victory was only a matter of time.

From Israel’s perspective, Grandmaster Baron Tal was on the receiving end throughout the match and went on to lose all 12 games that he played against Indians.

The best Israeli player was Ilia Smirin who scored 8 points in all and was especially effective in the last round where he scored 3.5/4. International Master Gil Popliski scored 4.5 points while Vitali Golod ended up with six points in all.

Sasikiran was by far the best Indian as well as the best player in the meet scoring 9.5 points out of a possible 12.

B Adhiban and Abhijeet Gupta scored seven and half and six and half points respectively while first day heroGopal lost steam and ended up with six points in all.

Chairman of Airports Authority of India Mr. V P Agrawal distributed the prizes in a ceremony organized soon after the matches. The AAI sponsored the event.

RAMCO – TNSCA CASH AWARDS FUNCTION

The Biennial Ramco-TNSCA Cash Awards Function for the years 2009-10 and 2010-11 will be held on 25th February 2012 from 5.30 PM onwards. The venue of the function will be announced later.
These Cash Awards are to be given for Achievers from Tamil Nadu for the Gold medals/titles won in National/International Championships in the years 2009-10 and 2010-11. The entire amount of Rs.5, 10, 000/- (Rupess Five Lakh and Ten Thousand only) is donated by Ramco Group of Companies as a generous gesture by its Chairman Shri. P. R. Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha.
As a general rule, one player is awarded one cash award only– the maximum that is eligible to receive.
