The 6th Annual Philadelphia Open was held over the Easter week from April 4-8, 2012, at the upscale, luxury Loews Philadelphia Hotel, rated Four Diamonds by AAA, 1200 Market Street, Philadelphia.
The event had 8 sections: Open, Under 2200, Under 2000, Under 1800, Under 1600, Under 1400, Under 1200 and Under 1000.
GM Magesh Panchanathan of India finished atop the standings in the Open Section with 7/9 points. Panchanathan beat the last year winner GM Tamaz Gelashvili in the final round to secure victory after the other players that were tied with him going into the round all drew. There was a logjam of GMs just a half-point behind the leader.
The Open Section was a 9 round Swiss tournament with GM and IM norm opportunities. This group was played over a 5-day schedule.
The event had a $80,000 projected prize fund with $60,000 guaranteed.
