50th National Challengers Chess Championship


Tirupathi (20 May 12): Three players including World Under-18 bronze medalist International Master Debashis Das of Orissa share the lead with four points from as many rounds of the ongoing 50th National Challengers Chess Championship here at Ramatulasi Kalyana Mandapam on Sunday.
Playing black side of Queen’s Gambit Accepted variation, Das displayed sheer skills in the Queen and Pawn ending to garner full point against his Karnataka rival Arvind Shastry in 45 moves.
International Master Saptarshi Roy of Railways and G Akash of Tamilnadu joined Das at the top of point table after defeating Vignesh N R of Tamilnadu and Women Grandmaster Kiran Manisha Mohanty of Orissa respectively.
In a surprising result, second seed International Master S Satyapragyan crumbled under time pressure to hand over full point to his Andhra Pradesh rival P Praveen Prasad in a keenly contested fourth round encounter.
Earlier in the third round, top seed and defending champion Vikramaditya Kulkarni signed the peace treaty with International Master R Balasubramaniam after a marathon match that lasted 123 moves while second seed International Master S Satyapragyan settled for half point against E P Nirmal of Kerala and talented Orissa youngster Utkal Ranjan Sahoo outwitted International Master C Praveen Kumar of Railways.
