Mary wins NPCC 2013
Mary Ann Gomes of West Bengal won a hat trick of titles by capturing the coveted United Bank of India 40th National Premier Chess Championship, organised by Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy at The Spring Club, Kolkata from 25th August to 5th September 2013.
The tournament has been given a new lease of life in the form of round robin format, with 12 strong players of the country. The average rating was 2256, making it a Category nine tournament for women.
International master Tania Sachdev of Airport Authority of India was the top rated player in the tournament, followed by the defending champion WGM Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata.
Other attractions were former world junior girls champion WGM Soumya Swaminathan of PSPB, former champions WGM Swathi Ghate of LIC and IM Nisha Mohota of PSPB, besides former world Under 14 girls champion Padmini Rout of Orissa.

Carlsen in Chennai
Carlsen is visiting India to inspect Hyatt Regency, the venue for his match against Anand for the World Chess Championship match. During his first ever trip to India, Carlsen will be touring New Delhi and Chennai. He is scheduled to play simultaneous chess with young players at MOP Vaishnav College on Monday. The Norwegian may meet the Tamil Nadu chief minister on Tuesday before he flies back home on the same day.
In the first inspection of the venue, Carlsen’s delegation will include his father Henrik Carlsen, his manager Espen Agdestein, and a group of journalists.
Viswanathan Anand’s wife and manager Aruna has already inspected the tournament venue.

FIDE World Chess Championship 2013 contract signed
After a delay of two months and the inclusion of an illness clause in the terms and conditions, World No.1 and challenger Magnus Carlsen and the World Champion Viswanathan Anand signed the contract for the World Chess Championship match that is scheduled to take place in Chennai from November 7 to 28 this year.
“For the first time in a world chess championship match, we have introduced an illness clause that states that a player can take two days off if he falls sick,” said the organizers from India, and added that the players were expected to sign the contract long ago. “Mails went back and forth between the players, organizers and FIDE before it was finally settled on Tuesday.”

Gelfand strikes at Tal Memorial
Boris Gelfand was declared sole winner of the Tal Memorial today in Moscow. The Israeli grandmaster had an undefeated performance of +3; two of his wins were achieved with the black pieces. This great run put Gelfand back in the top-10 at the live ratings list; he is 9th after gaining 18 points in this event. Defending champion Magnus Carlsen recovered from his loss against Caruana in the third round to finish sole second with 5.5/9 points.
The best Russian in the competition ended up being the lowest-rated, Dmitry Andreikin. The national champion drew eight of his games and defeated Vladimir Kramnik. Andreikin shared 3rd-5th places with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Fabiano Caruana. The young Italian jumped to third place in the live ratings list, and is four points away from the 2800-mark.

2013 Asian Continental Championship (Open)
The 2013 Asian Continental Championship (Open) was held on 18-26th May in Manila, Philippines. The tournament was organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and Eugene Torre Chess Foundation, Inc.
75 players from 14 federations, including 26 Grandmasters and 18 IMs, took part in the tournament.
Chinese Grandmaster Li Chao emerged Asian Continental Champion after concluding the tournament with 7,0/9 points.
Half a point behind, there were five players sharing the 2nd place. Local chess fans are delighted that Philippines’ Grandmasters Oliver Barbosa and Mark Paragua grabbed the silver and bronze medals respectively.

World Chess Championship Match 2013 at chennai
The General Secretary of Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, V. Hariharan, has invited the local press for a meeting “in connection with the World Chess Championship Match 2013 between Grandmaster V.Anand and Grandmaster Carlsen to be held at Chennai during November, 2013″.
The venue of the Press meet will be Raj Park, 180 T.T.K.Road, Alwarpet, Chennai – 18 .at 05:00 pm today, Monday 8th April, 2013.

FIDE April rating list
The FIDE April rating list has been published. Magnus Carlsen maintains the first position with the same points as in March. Despite playing some games, they are all in the Candidates tournament, which is not finished yet and thus not counted.
Similar is the situation of most Candidates participants, except for Kramnik and Gelfand who lose 9 and 1 points respectively from the Zurich Chess Challenge. The winner of that competition, Fabiano Caruana, is back to the top 10, after gaining 12 points, the highest rating gain from all top 100 players.
